general info on vb and databases need - beginner level

Hi,

I'm looking to write an application for our small group of colleagues. I have considered various options, but the easiest seems to be vb+access. But since I'm not proficient in both, I'd like to hear your advice. Beware of the textwall!

situation:
We gathered a lot of data through the years, but this has accumulated into 2 excel files, and 2 access tables. Escpecially because some tables store duplicate information, I want to reconcile all data in one database and have an interface so that each of the 6-8 colleagues can interact with the data. We have a shared document server to put the database file on, and I'd use access to handle the queries since Access (unlike excel) can handle a handful users at the same time (and we're not on it continously) and runs on a local machine instead of a central operating system.

what I want:
I'd like to write an interface that can easily gather related data from the database (will have 60-70 columns, so no longer humanly useful). This should not be interacted with from external sources (rules out the html-php-mysql trio which I'm proficient with) and the queries should be run by their local machines (since we don't have a server that's runnning.)

So, from what I read, this can be done with vb, linked to an access database. Now before I start to read tutorials, what kind of vb would I need to interact with MS Access 2007? With no budget (currently). Am I on the right track or am I missing crucial information? Please note that I only have some crude knowledge of informatic technologies, so please don't assume I know the latest tech wonders.

Anyway, many thanks for your insights!
Garwain
