Museum Collection Database

Hello,
I'm trying to create a database of a museum's collection with two parts:
1. the museum curators can update the collection
2. Museum patrons can search the DB to look for pieces and information about them; like at a library

Now my question involves my approach to the task at hand. I have something in mind, but I would like to know if there is a more straightforward approach that is applicable. I'm thinking to create the actual DB in access for the curators to maintain, then to use VB to write the program that would allow patrons to search said DB.
I've used VB before, but never for accessing a DB.
I've never really used Access too much before, but i like that it's very straight forward to create and maintain a DB.
